You may find out “how to” take care of this animal in many different ways on the internet. After years of breeding and caring for this species, we have found that this particular approach works best for us. That is outlined in this care sheet.
A diminutive form of the common boa constrictor is the Dumerils boa constrictor for sale. In the wild, they are a threatened species. You should only get this snake from reliable breeders who offer stock that has been raised in captivity.
DUMERILS BOA HOUSING
For the newborns, start with a 10-gallon container. Once the infant is a year old, you can expand the enclosure. Two good examples are glass aquariums and any of the commercially available plastic-style reptile cages. When it comes to yearlings,
Go up to an enclosure measuring 30″ by 12″ (such as the Zilla critter cage 20 Long) or 36″ by 12″ (such as the Zilla critter cage 36 Long) (Exo Terra Large, or Zilla 40 gal). A shy boa infant will feel more secure if they can hide on both the warm and cool sides of the enclosure (more on that in the heating section).
For an adult, you’ll need a large 5+ foot molded plastic reptile cage or a custom habitat. Because females can be far fatter than males, you should be ready for a larger enclosure if you have a female. While a 6′ x 2′ cage is a good place to start, many people have built larger and more creative enclosures.
They like to hide in leaf litter and other detritus, even though they are not true underground reptiles. Their color offers superior concealment. There are numerous bedding choices available for your Dumerils boa. The best ones are Zoo Med eco earth, Zoo Med snake aspen, and Zilla jungle mix. One of their favorite activities is burrowing.
Spot clean the bedding every time they urinate. It should only require a thorough cleaning once a month or so. Replace the bedding and sanitize the enclosure at that point. Vinegar and water or Zoo Meds wipes can be used to clean cages. Although it doesn’t look as good and you’ll have to change it all when they urinate on it, using newspaper is also acceptable.
HEAT AND LIGHTING OF DUMERILS BOA
These boas like warm environments because they are native to a warm, semi-arid region. Like all reptiles, they depend on external thermoregulation to maintain a healthy body temperature. This essentially means that you need to have a heated side and a chilled side for your enclosure. The cold side should be on one side and all of the heat elements on the other. As required, your Dumerils boa will be able to transition between the various temperatures.
On the hot side, the ideal temperature is between 88 and 90 degrees. Put one hide on the side that is warmer and the other on the side that is colder. Adults are not permitted to use hides. The cool side could be between eighty and eighty-five degrees. Nighttime lows that are too low are not recommended. It is also advised to use an under-tank heat pad and a basking light.
Typically, heat pads are covered with a hide and positioned on the hot side. For added warmth at night, we suggest a Zoo Med or Exo Terra heat pad that runs continuously for seven days a week. These two objects are situated beneath the cage, on its exterior. A heat pad that covers only half of the tank—or less—is required.
For big wood or molded plastic enclosures, heat panels work well. The best light dome for the purpose of basking light containment is one with a ceramic casing, an on/off switch to endure extreme heat, and is produced by companies like Exo Terra and Flukers.
Additionally, make use of a high-quality temperature gauge, like the Exo Terras Thermometer or the Zoo Meds digital temperature gauge. Don’t try to estimate something. Additionally, you can use timers and/or rheostats to regulate your heat source. Using hot rocks is not recommended. They tend to heat up in an uneven fashion across a small area, which can cause serious burns.
HUMIDITY OF DUMERILS BOA
With your Dumerils boa, always keep a non-porous water dish filled with fresh water. Water bowls from Flukers or Exo Terras and a quality ceramic crock dish make excellent accent pieces. Scrub the bowl once a week or more to avoid the formation of bacterial slime. These boas do not require high humidity levels. If you maintain the humidity between 40 and 60%, your boa should be able to shed properly.

FEEDING OF DUMERILS BOA
Before feeding your snake, you should wait a few hours to handle it. It can be fed in a feeding tub or inside its enclosure. It is all up to you. Some Dumerils boas refuse to be moved before they eat. They are generally calm snakes, despite having a great eating reaction.
If you’re concerned that your pet may think you’re going to feed it every time you handle it, get a quality snake hook. Just hook your snake out of its enclosure when you want to hold it. There are two types of these hooks: a bigger hook for adults and a collapsible hook for newborns. Ball python for sale, Corn snake, Reptiles store, Snakes for sale, Reptiles for sale
Use a snake hook when removing your boa to significantly reduce the chance of getting bitten by a feeding reflex. Don’t approach your snake from the front if you want to catch it but don’t have a hook. Reach around and grab your snake from behind. In this manner, your hand will avoid striking it in the face.
Hatchlings through two years of age
One rodent of the appropriate size once a week. That is to say, the girth of the rodent (at its broadest point, not his neck size) should not be greater than the girth of the snake. It is said by some that you can feed them rats that are 1.5 times the diameter of the snake.
Contrarily, boas have a slow metabolism, and our observations show that they eat well and don’t skip meals if their girth isn’t significantly increased. Don’t handle your snake for at least a day after it has eaten.
Adults DUMERILS BOA
You can limit the quantity of rodents to one every two weeks if you’d like. If you choose to do this, make sure the meal is substantial and don’t skimp on ingredients.
As an alternative, continue feeding once a week, but slightly reduce the amount of food compared to feeding every two weeks.
In general, snakes don’t eat when they’re in the shed. Don’t feed it till after it has shed.
Baby boas will feed all winter long if they are kept warm enough. Conversely, some adults might “go off eating” during this time. They naturally start reproducing at this time, which means they eat less. Just keep an eye on your snake’s general well-being and weight. In a healthy boa, this is typically not a reason for alarm. Feed your snake approximately every two weeks until it starts to eat again.
TEMPERAMENT OF DUMERILS BOA
Dumerils boas are peaceful creatures with stunning patterns and colors; given the right care, they can make wonderful pets.
Never forget to hold your snake with its body supported. Boas like to explore, but they will usually settle down on you after a short while. Give your pet time to get used to you being around.
It is not a good idea to touch the top of the head. It will flinch away from you if you touch the top of its head unless it knows and trusts you. The quick movement is called “head shy,” and it terrifies a lot of people who don’t know anything about snakes. Most folks will be able to get over it with kind handling.
Before handling your Dumerils boa, give it a day or two to acclimate to its new environment. Take your time and gradually increase the amount of time you spend with your snake out. Remember that you have the power to decide what happens to your new pet. Thus, kindly take good care of it.
