Description
Asian Small Clawed Otter
This is the smallest of the nineteen species of otter and can be found in lowland streams, marshes, estuaries, and rice fields in Southern Asia and Indonesia.
They search for tiny crabs, mollusks, and fish to feed by using their paws to burrow in the ground and beneath rocks. Their probing tendency makes them unpopular with rice planters since they uproot the budding plants and eat a lot of tiny crabs that are a nuisance in the rice fields. The Asian Short Clawed Otter is a lively species that is more social and diurnal in nature. It usually forms lifelong partnerships with both parents actively involved in raising offspring. The European otter, which is native to our region, is a shy, reticent, and primarily nocturnal species. Thus, from the viewpoint of a visitor, it is the ideal species to be kept and seen at the sanctuary.
Upon closer inspection, you will see that the front feet are not webbed like those of the European otter; instead, they have small, nimble rubbery toes that they use to winkle food out of crevices and under stones. During your visit, you may witness a few of the Asian otters that have become quite good at juggling stones between their feet. This is especially true after feeding time when they want to show off.

These otters are used by fishermen in Southeast Asia to force schools of fish into their nets. The otters are kept on long lines wearing harnesses and are free to catch any kind of fish they like. Working from boats with three or four tame otters, the fishermen take good advantage of the otters and even breed them for this purpose.
